DWU picks up one win, one record in Orange City

ORANGE CITY, Iowa The Dakota Wesleyan University track and field team won one event and set a school record Thursday afternoon at the Red Raider Open in Orange City, Iowa.

Freshman Isaac Van Essen won the long jump competition and Jessica Fossum set the school record in the heptathlon at the two-day event. Van Essen, a Sioux Falls native, won the long jump with a leap of 20-feet-11.75 inches.

Fossum finished fourth in the heptathlon with 3,439 points, a school record. She took third in the 200-meter dash (28.54) and the 800 (2:49.67); fourth in the shot put (30-0.25) and javelin (88-1); fifth in the long jump (15-2) and sixth in the 100 hurdles (18.24) and high jump (4-1.5).

Teammate Ariana Arampatzis took fifth in the heptathlon with 3,143 points the fifth-most in school history. She took second in the javelin with a toss of 90-10, and third in the shot put with a mark of 31-6.5. She also took fourth in the 100 hurdles (17.14), fifth in the high jump (4-5), sixth in the long jump (14-10.5) and seventh in the 200 (29.64) and 800 (3:17.36).

Three other members of the DWU women s track team recorded top-10 finishes in their events in Orange City. Skylar Forgey ran the fifth-best 1,500-meter run in school history and took 10th in 5:13.39. Jessica Neises took eighth in the 400 hurdles in 1:13.76, the sixth-best time in school history and Abby Fossum took fifth in the triple jump with a leap of 32-10.25, the 10th-best mark in DWU history.

Also for the Tiger women Jamie Geho took eighth in the 5,000-meter run in 22:48, Heather Banister took ninth in the 400-meter dash in 1:19.87 and Shequela Quarles finished 14th in the long jump with a mark of 13-2.

Daniel Porter recorded a pair of top-five finishes for the Dakota Wesleyan men. He took fourth in the long jump with a leap of 19-9 and fifth in the triple jump with a mark of 41-8.75. Ryan Antaya finished in the top 10 twice. He took seventh in the hammer throw with a toss of 115-7 and ninth in the javelin with a mark of 134-3.

Kellan Willet took 15th in the 5,000-meter run in 16:57.2, Jeff Sahli took 18th in the same race in 17:22.2 and Paul Apenhorst finished 11th in the 400 hurdles in 1:07.35. The 400-meter relay squad of Jedd Schlicht, Van Essen, Porter and Tyler Volesky took seventh in 45.89 seconds.

Dakota Wesleyan returns to action Tuesday, April 22, when it takes part in the Mount Marty Twilight Invite starting at 4:30 p.m. in Yankton, S.D.
