MITCHELL, S.D. With a successful 2014-15 season now in the books, the awards keep rolling in for Dakota Wesleyan University programs with the announcement of several scholar athlete teams over the last week.

In total, 11 Tigers were named Daktronics-NAIA Scholar Athletes for the spring season, with representatives coming from baseball, softball, women s outdoor track and field, and men s and women s golf, it was announced Thursday.

To be named an NAIA Scholar Athlete, a student athlete must maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale and must have achieved a junior academic status.

The DWU baseball team led the way with five award winners from the 2015 Great Plains Athletic Conference tournament champions. The honorees include junior Andrew Becker (Tea, S.D.), junior Christian Doyle (Jackson, Wyo.), senior Alex Meyer (Heron Lake, Minn.), junior Dustin Steckler (Garretson, S.D.) and junior Jake Capko (Corvallis, Mont.).

The DWU softball team and women s track and field team each had two representatives. Junior Hailey Unger (Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada) and junior Vanessa Mendez (Monterey Park, Calif.) from softball each picked up their first Scholar Athlete nods, while junior MacKenize Stevens (Polk, Neb.) and senior Abby Fossum (Canton, S.D.) made the list from women s track and field. Stevens was also named a Scholar Athlete earlier in the school year after the DWU volleyball season.

The women s golf team was represented by junior Lauren Fitts (Brookings, S.D.), the three-time GPAC Golfer-of-the-Year. Junior Anthony Husher (Winner, S.D.) made his first appearance as well from the men s golf team.
